Webinar: Community Engagement for Accelerating Access to Social Protection, Welfare, and Solidarity – 9 September 2024

The Unit of Well-Being, Department of Health Promotion at WHO-HQ, has launched a six-webinar series with the theme “Empowering Communities to Take Control of Their Health and Well-Being’’.

The fourth webinar, “Community Engagement for Accelerating Access to Social Protection, Welfare, and Solidarity” is scheduled for Monday, September 9, 2024, from 14:00 to 16:00 CEST. The post-COVID-19 situation has exacerbated social inequities and demonstrated the fragility of protective systems aimed at providing people access to basic commodities. Persistent and emerging complex global challenges have led to political decisions made to the detriment of the social protection and welfare of the population. The most vulnerable population groups had to severely endure the impact of these decisions, which some instances led to poverty. Only existing resilient systems and governance models based on participatory approaches were able to cope, mitigate the impact of these decisions, and shape solutions.

Objectives

This webinar aims to:

  • present the evidence on the impact of the lack of social protection systems on equity and health.
  • explore the challenges and the gaps that have hindered communities from accessing social protection.
  • share country examples and draw lessons where access to social protection schemes by vulnerable communities is facilitated through collaborative efforts.
  • identify key policy options for building community capacity to take action and improving access to social protection, welfare programs, and schemes.

Speakers

  • Dr. Louise Potvin, Professor, Université de Montréal (moderator)
  • Goof Buijs, Manager, UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education
  • Gerlinde Rohrauer-Näf, Head, Competence Center at Austrian Public Health Institute
  • Dr. Suzi Mala, University of Pretoria, South Africa
  • Ingrid Holsen, Professor, University of Bergen, Norway

The event will be held virtually via Zoom and in English.
