SUMMARY:Webinar: School is more than a place to learn - UNESCO Chair speaking
DESCRIPTION:School is more than a place to learn: An intersectoral assessment of adolescent well-being prior to and after the COVID-19 pandemic in the WHO European Region \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nChaired by: Professor Ingrid Wolfe OBE\, Professor of Paediatrics and Child Population Health\, Consultant Paediatric Population Medicine\, Kings College\, London \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers:  \n\n\n\n\nDr. Nicola Gray\, Co-Chair\, UNESCO Chair ‘Global Health & Education’\n\n\n\nMary Cronin\, Specialty Registrar in Public Health\n\n\n\nDr. Maximilian Limburg\, Specialty Registrar in Public Health\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nA webinar supporting the development of a new WHO/UNICEF regional strategy for Child and Adolescent Health in Europe and Central Asia\, as part of our Public Health in Practice Special Issue \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis webinar will present a research study that examined changes in adolescent well-being across the WHO European Region following the Covid-19 pandemic. Adolescent well-being was assessed using the UN H6+ framework\, which includes: 1) Good health and optimal nutrition\, 2) Connectedness\, positive values\, and societal contribution\, 3) Safety and a supportive environment\, 4) Learning\, competence\, education\, skills\, and employability\, and 5) Agency and resilience. Secondary analysis of data from two large datasets concerning adolescents\, the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Survey and the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA)\, revealed a decline in well-being across European countries from 2018 (pre-pandemic) to 2022 (post-pandemic). Additionally\, the study highlighted a significant widening of educational inequalities in the aftermath of the pandemic. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nKey Issues for Debate: \n\n\n\n\nHow can we prevent existing inequalities in educational attainment from widening?\n\n\n\nHow can we improve our data collection strategies about school closure impact for future health crises?\n\n\n\nWhat would an intersectoral strategy on adolescent well-being look like\, to minimize the impact of future emergency measures?\n\n\n\n\n

This online event\, organised by EuroHealthNet in collaboration with FEAST—a project aimed at catalysing Europe’s transition to a ‘Win-Win-Win-Win’ food system—offers a unique opportunity to rethink Europe’s future and contribute to a vision that works for everyone. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this Policy Chat\, together we will explore ways to counteract and challenge this ideology\, proposing alternatives that prioritise health and sustainability. Our panel of experts will each present their ideas for achieving a healthier and more sustainable food system. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nExpert speakers are: \n\n\n\n\nProfessor Molly Anderson – Middlebury College\, USA\n\n\n\nProfessor Tim Lang – City University of London\n\n\n\nAnant Jani – Heidelberg Institute for Global Health\, Germany & University of Oxford\, UK (Coordinator of the Horizon Europe project FEAST)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe discussion will be moderated by EuroHealthNet’s Samuele Tonello\, and Sofia Romagosa Vilarnau. Participants will also have the chance to engage in an interactive Q&A. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister to attend online via this link

SUMMARY:Conference Laying the Foundation for Healthy and Active Ageing: the Role of Schools in Promoting Lifelong Wellbeing
DESCRIPTION:The “SHE4AHA” project invites you to a European Conference on the 16th of January\, where they will discuss the importance of early interventions\, and the promotion of health in schools\, to create more active and healthy ageing in the EU. \n\n\n\nThis conference is part of the ERASMUS + project “SHE4AHA”\, where they have worked with the Health Promoting School approach in 15 pilot schools around Europe. \n\n\n\nThe project takes its starting point in the green paper on ageing from 2021\, where the Commission called for good practices. We have therefore invited the Commission and we have organised a panel discussion. So\, if you are interested in this subject\, the time has come to join the discussion with the Commission. \n\n\n\nJoin the conference also to hear about the practical experiences in the project\, and meet some of the school managers and teachers\, who have managed to engage colleagues\, pupils and parents in local strategies and projects. They have worked together to create better health among children and young people\, laying the foundation for a healthier adult life\, through a health promoting school. \n\n\n\nMore information about the conference.

SUMMARY:Establishing the effectiveness of complex health promotion interventions: Shining light on alternatives  - 12 November 2024
DESCRIPTION:Pre-conference of the 17th European Public Health Conference\n\n\n\nOn 12 November 2024 from 9.00 – 17.00 the EUPHA Health Promotion section\, in collaboration with the UNESCO Chair on Global Health & Education\, are organising the pre-conference “Establishing the effectiveness of complex health promotion interventions: Shining light on alternatives”. \n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nA large share of the programmes and policies developed by field workers to cater to the specific needs of local populations are not amenable to the evaluation methods and designs which are typically ranked at the top of the evidence pyramid and usually seek to study only one factor at a time\, all other things being equal. This is a major impediment to the development and improvement of local programmes that are accounting for the specific resources and barriers found locally and that adopt a participatory strategy. In this pre-conference\, we will reflect on the challenges facing health promotion practitioners and researchers in establishing the effectiveness of their programmes and policies and will explore alternatives to the traditional epistemological and methodological perspectives. \n\n\n\nThrough presentations on the epistemological and methodological perspectives driving new evaluative approaches\, discussions on real-life experiences\, and small-group activities\, this interactive preconference will offer a wealth of ideas and knowledge to public health professionals\, researchers and policy makers and provide them with opportunities to build collaborations and expand their networks. Materials presented during this pre-conference and the consensus built among the participants will feed into the writing of a statement to be disseminated through the channels and networks of the organisers. This event is building on the Global Handbook of Health Promotion Research initiated by the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education. \n\n\n\nSpeakers\n\n\n\nThe following speakers will be involved in this pre-conference: \n\n\n\n\nElisabeth Nöhammer\, UMIT – Private University for Health Sciences\, Medical Informatics and Technology\, Austria\n\n\n\nEric Breton\, President of the EUHPA Health Promotion Section\, EHESP School of Public Health\, France\n\n\n\nGoof Buijs\, manager UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education\, The Netherlands\n\n\n\nKarina Leksy\, Institute of Pedagogy\, Faculty of Social Sciences\, University of Silesia in Katowice\, Poland\n\n\n\nMichelle Baybutt – Professor of Health and Justice\, Director of the Healthy and Sustainable Settings Unit\, School of Health\, Social Work and Sport\, United Kingdom\n\n\n\nNicola Gray\, Chairholder UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education\, Reader at the University of Huddersfield\, United Kingdom\n\n\n\nSilvia de Ruiter\, project officer UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education\, The Netherlands\n\n\n\n\nMore information and registration\n\n\n\nFor more information please see the EPH conference website. \n\n\n\nRegistration for the pre-conference is € 150\,-.
