SUMMARY:Webinar Strategies for School Health Promotion during COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted schools all over the world. Schools in many countries closed in haste and had to create virtual learning opportunities for their students. The reopening of schools is taking place in various speeds and with different guidance at national and/or local level. \nThe UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education gathered the experiences and opinions of education and health professionals about  reopening schools safely and/or to keeping them open. The survey explored the public health measures that have been put in place in schools; communication of guidance at national and/or local level\, and the facilitators or barriers to safe reopening. Nicola Gray (Affiliated researcher\, UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education; Senior Lecturer\, University of Huddersfield\, UK) will provide a preview of the results of this survey on the safe reopening of schools during COVID-19. \nThe WHO-Europe Technical Advisory Group for schooling during COVID-19 recommends that ‘the principles of health-promoting schools (HPS) are even more important in a pandemic’. However\, moving from recognition of HPS values to putting these into practice is challenging. Veronica Velasco (Assistant professor\, Department of Psychology\, University of Milano-Bicocca\, Italy) wrote a new document on School Health Promotion during COVID-19 for the Schools for Health in Europe network (SHE). The relevance of the HPS approach during the COVID-19 pandemic will be discussed and implementation strategies based on the HPS approach will be presented. \nDuring this webinar the experts will explore the following questions: \n\nWhat are the experiences of education and health professionals around the world concerning the safe reopening of schools?\nWhy is the HPS approach relevant during the COVID-19 pandemic and how can HPS be implemented?\nWhat can we learn to better prepare schools for future epidemics and disasters?\n\nThis webinar is organised by the Schools for Health in Europe Network Foundation (SHE)\, the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education\, the University of Huddersfield and the University of Milano-Bicocca. \nJoin the webinar. This webinar will also be broadcasted live on our YouTube channel. \nMore information

SUMMARY:Addressing hate speech through education – Multi-stakeholder online forum
DESCRIPTION:Hate speech is on the rise worldwide\, with the potential to incite violence\, undermine social cohesion and tolerance\, and cause psychological\, emotional and physical harm based on xenophobia\, racism\, antisemitism\, anti-Muslim hatred and other forms of intolerance and discrimination (UN\, 2020). History has shown us that genocide and other atrocity crimes begin with words – there is a collective responsibility to address hate speech in the present day to prevent further violence in the future. \nAs part of the implementation of the United Nations Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate speech\, UNESCO and the UN Office on the Prevention of Genocide and the Responsibility to Protect will convene the “Global Multi-stakeholder Forum on addressing hate speech through education” on 30 September and 1 October 2021. The Forum will serve to provide inputs for the upcoming “Global Education Ministers Conference on addressing hate speech through education” due to take place on 26 October 2021. \nThe Forum will encompass two days of online dialogues\, bringing together teachers/educators\, youth\, civil society organizations\, human rights experts\, tech and social media companies and government representatives\, with a view to promote meaningful engagement\, discuss the role of education in addressing hate speech and identify key recommendations for a way forward ahead of the Ministerial Conference. \nTo attend this public event please register on the link below as soon as possible as there are limited places: REGISTER HERE. \nMore info about addressing hate speech through education by UNESCO\, here.

SUMMARY:Webinar Dynamics in School Health Promotion
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is organised by the Schools for Health in Europe Network Foundation (SHE) and the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education. The webinar will be held in English. \n  \nSummary: \nImplementing the Health Promoting School (HPS) approach and creating change in the whole school system can be challenging\, since schools are dynamic organisations. Each school operates in its own specific context and health promoting interventions should fit to that unique context. Consequently\, this indicates a variety of choices when implementing the HPS approach\, flexibility is thus needed. This webinar focuses on these dynamics in school health promotion. In the first part of the webinar\, the variety of choices will be illustrated by different spectra on which can be navigated by researchers and practitioners. The second part will focus on research findings regarding the self-reported navigation on these spectra in 24 member countries of SHE (Schools for Health in Europe network foundation). The last part will focus on how this approach can contribute to the future of school health promotion (research). The speakers will address the following questions: \n\nHow can you deal with studying the dynamics in school health promotion? \nHow do countries in the European region deal with the dynamics in school health promotion?\nHow does this work contribute to the future of school health promotion (research)? \n\n  \nSpeakers are: \n\nDr. Nina Bartelink – Researcher\, Health promotion; School for Public Health and Primary Care; Faculty of Health\, Medicine and Life Sciences; Maastricht University\, the Netherlands\nDr. Kathelijne Bessems – Senior Researcher and Lecturer\, NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism; Department of Health Promotion; Faculty of Health\, Medicine & Life Sciences; Maastricht University\, the Netherlands\nProf. Stef Kremers – Professor of the Prevention of Obesity\, NUTRIM School of Nutrition and Translational Research in Metabolism; Department of Health Promotion; Faculty of Health\, Medicine & Life Sciences; Maastricht University\, the Netherlands\n\n  \nJoin the webinar

SUMMARY:One year into COVID: Prioritizing education recovery to avoid a generational catastrophe - high-level Ministerial on-line event - UNESCO Chair GHE speaking
DESCRIPTION:As the world enters a second year living with the COVID-19 pandemic\, UNESCO will convene a high-level ministerial event on 29 March to take stock of lessons learnt\, the greatest risks facing education and strategies to leave no learner behind\, building on the actions of the Global Education Coalition (GEC) established in March 2020 that marks its first anniversary. \n  \nThe meeting will provide the global education community with a space for policy dialogue to assess lessons learnt and the most pressing current challenges\, informed by the presentation of key data sets. Main participants will be Ministers of Education\, high-level representatives of partners within the GEC and of sister agencies. The debate will be framed around three key topics related to: \n  \n\nSchool dropout & learning loss: what are the top policy measures taken to mitigate against school drop out? What remedial actions have been most successful so far to make up for learning loss?\nKeeping schools open\, prioritizing and supporting teachers: how to keep schools open as a priority and ensure a safe learning environment? How to ensure that teachers are safe\, considered as frontline workers and supported to adapt to a new learning reality?\nDigital transformation and the future of education:  what are the key strategies for digital transformation of education systems? How can public-private partnership contribute to advancing the digital transformation? How has COVID-19 impacted the future of education?\n\nProfessor Didier Jourdan\, chair holder of the UNESCO Chair Global Health & Education will deliver an opening presentation about emerging evidence on safe school reopening.
